You Have to Tell the Truth Before You Can Live Your Legacy
We must develop the ability to tell the truth, not only to those around us but most importantly to ourselves. This is the way we will honor our Legacy.
When living our Legacy and going through the process of figuring out who you have to become to get what you want it all starts with getting hyper clear on where you currently are. We must develop the ability to tell the truth, not only to those around us but most importantly to ourselves. As simple as that sounds, it blows my mind how many people struggle with telling the truth.
In today’s culture, people are so caught up in being politically correct and trying to make 100% of people happy 100% of the time. Which is an impossible task, and one that holds us back. We are afraid to say the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time. We are always trying to put forward our best image, or worse yet a blatantly false one. With social media, we hardly ever share the whole story. Opting to portray how great life is when in reality many of us are struggling. We are afraid to put our real feelings and opinions out into the world for fear of backlash. Fear of what others might think or say if they see our post. Fear of judgment from not only our peers but complete strangers. There are even hundreds of filters out there to make our photos and images look better than we do in real life.
All of the above are forms of lying and living out of true alignment with who we are deep down inside. I go into this topic to make the point that on the surface, it sounds easy to tell the truth, when in reality it’s not easy for most. We often ask for permission in conversations with others if we can be honest with them. For instance, if I tell someone how I truly feel or what my real opinion is about an issue, they might explode right in front of my eyes.
We are the biggest liars when dealing with ourselves and our reality. We try lying to ourselves. We don’t tell the truth. Whether it be about our physical shape or appearance, our financial outlook, our career path, our relationships, you name it. The list goes on. We are masters at convincing ourselves that all of those aspects of our life are better than they truly are.
I am not immune to this and did it myself. For years I let myself go physically. I continued to think of and look at myself as the 20-year-old, strong, physically fit and athletic college football player. The reality hit when someone showed me a picture of myself at 39 years of age with my shirt off. I was overweight, out of shape, and nowhere near the 20-year-old version of myself.
If your goal is to become the person you want to be, you have first to get clear about the current reality of who and where you are. This is your starting point. You have to take a ruthless assessment of yourself and where you’re currently at before figuring out who you have to become to get what you want. Once you evaluate your current reality and get clear on your starting point, you can start to create the image of the person that you need to become to finally Live your Legacy.
But until you stop lying to yourself, and by extension others, you’ll never be ready to step into the Legacy Lifestyle you desire.
